The Event Report from the 8th GLF Investment Case highlights how finance can be transformed to support long-term wellbeing and nature-positive outcomes by centering local leadership, reforming incentives, mobilizing catalytic and blended finance, and responsibly using digital tools and AI to channel capital toward communities restoring landscapes and seascapes.

Key messages

  • Finance must be repurposed for long-term wellbeing and regeneration, embedding communities culture and leadership; landscape understanding; inclusive finance and knowledge systems to advance equity and stewardship.
  • Mainstreaming nature in finance demands incentive reform, strong safeguards, and nature-positive instruments aligned with the three Rio Conventions and locally led biodiversity finance – essential for climate action and economies within planetary boundaries.
  • Locally-led financial models are driving innovation – new digital tools are powering locally-led finance, shaping portfolios and channeling capital directly to the stewards restoring landscapes and seascapes.
  • Catalytic capital is essential – DFIs, philanthropy need to work together; provide guarantees, insurance and new blended finance to unlock private investment at scale.
  • AI can accelerate capital flows responsibly when governed to strengthen sovereignty, transparency, and locally defined metrics

Scaling up integrated land management for a better future

In 2025 the FOLUR Impact Program continued in promoting “FOLURization”- a prototype for incorporating effective integrated landscape management principles into restoration efforts. Throughout the year, the FOLUR Impact Program further advanced action on environmental production practices, standards, and investments as companies and countries work toward achieving commitments to sustainable landscape management, production, and restoration.

Why Women’s Leadership is Important in Forest and Agricultural Landscape Projects

This brief highlights the crucial role of gender equality and women’s empowerment in sustainable food and land use initiatives. Strengthening women’s leadership in agricultural and forest landscape projects leads to higher agricultural productivity and economic gains, improved ecosystem conservation and sustainability, and greater CO2 emissions reductions and resilience.

Gender-neutral programs often overlook the unique contributions and challenges faced by women, potentially undermining conservation goals and human rights. Recognizing and rewarding women’s roles is essential for achieving environmental and social sustainability. Policies and decision-making in natural resource management significantly impact rural women, influencing their daily workloads and access to essential resources like fuelwood and non-timber forest products, which are vital for household livelihoods and food security.

The Food Systems, Land Use and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program is a $345 million initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the World Bank. Seeking to transform food and land use systems the program consists of a global knowledge platform and 27 country projects targeting the production landscapes of eight commodities: beef, cocoa, corn, coffee, palm oil, rice, soy, and wheat.

Over fiscal year 2024, the FOLUR Global Platform was supercharged into a larger movement by more broadly influencing change. In part, this occurred through increased integration into core partner and World Bank activities through a process colloquially known as FOLURization.

FOLUR offered to provide technical assistance to World Bank country projects interested in FOLURization within the Global Department for Agriculture and Food and the Global Department for the Environment.

Under this initiative, projects are learning about developing sustainable food production value chains, promoting land restoration through integrated landscape management (ILM), halting land degradation and deforestation, reaching low-carbon climate-resilient targets; and advancing dialogue on public-private initiatives, targeted analytical products, and training and case studies that prioritize country-level engagement. Early adopters include Ethiopia, Uganda, and Ukraine.

Rice is a cornerstone of global food systems, feeding 3.5 billion people daily and supporting 1.5 billion livelihoods worldwide. However, rice farming faces significant challenges, including its contribution to 12% of global methane emissions and intensive water use.

IFC’s Sustainable Rice Market Insights report explores the current state of global rice markets as well as the origin and evolution of the SRP to support the transformation of the rice sector towards sustainability. The report reviews the range of IFC’s experience in the rice sector to date and explores financing opportunities in sustainable rice supply chains, including sustainability-linked loans.

The time is now for food systems transformation. Humanity needs thriving food systems, but they are in crisis. Both by addressing immediate drivers of food insecurity and long-term systemic weaknesses that could trigger food insecurity, there has never been a more critical time to grasp the moment, break down the silos which obstruct progress, and build collaborative solutions for future food systems that are sustainable, inclusive and equitable, healthy, and resilient, serving both people and planet.

The objective of this White Paper is to identify pivotal themes and present transformative multidimensional solutions and areas of intervention for current and future UNDP engagement. It was produced by a cross disciplinary UNDP team and underwent consultation with internal and external stakeholders. UNDP collaborates, partners and supports a range of stakeholders – including other agencies within the UN system, lnternational Financial lnstitutions and other organizations – to collectively drive the strengthening of food systems towards enhanced resilience and sustainability. By actively participating in these collective endeavours, UNDP as SDG lntegrator brings expertise, resources, and strategic innovation to strengthen food systems.

Four Dimensions of Change

  • Dimension One – Improving food systems governance, programmes and policies
  • Dimension Two – Addressing structural drivers of unsustainable food systems
  • Dimension Three – The food value chain
  • Dimension Four – Sustainable finance for food systems resilience and transformation
